Spanish 1 is a yearlong course that encompasses the first level of studies in the Spanish language. The course expands the students’ knowledge of the Spanish language through the five Ohio Foreign Language Standards: Communication, Cultures, Connections, Comparisons and Communities. Spanish 1 is an introduction to the basic skills of speaking, listening, writing and reading taught through the application of simple grammatical concepts and practice in listening and speaking both as individuals and in pairs and groups. Upon completion of this course, students will be able to comprehend elementary spoken Spanish, develop and use vocabulary for practical everyday use, speak with correct pronunciation to be understood, read and write simple Spanish paragraphs and discuss and be sensitive to relevant aspects of Hispanic culture. Our goal is to provide students with an opportunity to acquire the Spanish language and to better understand Spanish-speaking cultures. This will be achieved through the use of written texts, video samples, audio activities and technology. Language is acquired by means of cooperative learning, drama, simulations and differentiated activities.
